Vernon was a professor of English Literature at the U. of Miss. in nearby Oxford, MS: Faulkner's home town. He organized a literary conference every year that convened Elvis Presley experts from around the globe. He also taught a class that compared the South Seas novels of Herman Melville to the South Seas movies of Elvis Presley. Name of the class? Melvis! (I'm not making this up.)
